-ING is the thing!
22. September 2010 - 09:09 UhrI detest hearing people say ‘I’m looking forward to SEE you.’ No, no, no!
‘Look forward to’ is always, and I really mean always, followed by the gerund.
Give up arguing with me now on this one, accept it and avoid making the mistake in future. I admit wincing on occasion, listening to people get it wrong. But not anymore, now that I’ve shared this with you, I can look forward to hearing you get it right in future.
And I don’t mind telling you the hard truth, it’s not the only time we need to consider using the gerund. I recommend taking a good look at these words.
| Admit | Appreciate | Avoid |
| Can’t stand | Carry on | Consider |
| Contemplate | Delay | Deny |
| Detest | Dread | Enjoy |
| Envisage | Fell like | Finish |
| Give up | Imagine | Involve |
| Justify | Look forward to | Mean |
| Mind | Miss | Put off |
| Recall | Recommend | Remember |
| Resent | Risk | Suggest |
So, enjoy learning the list, carry on practicing your English, and you can look forward to impressing all us native-speakers with your in depth knowledge.
Kind regards
Laura
